Marvel Finally Confirms Mephisto Exists In The MCU

Mephisto-MCU

The demon Mephisto was finally confirmed to exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during the latest episode of Agatha All Along. Sorcery and magic have existed in the MCU since the introductions of Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange in Phase 2, but there's still plenty to be explored in the live-action franchise. For example, Mephisto is a supervillain from Marvel Comics who often fights against magic users like Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch and Ghost Rider, but he has yet to make his MCU debut.

However, since the start of Phase 4, the MCU has further developed the magical side of the universe. WandaVision saw Wanda Maximoff finally become the Scarlet Witch and harness the full potential of her powers, and introduced Agatha All Along protagonist, the centuries-old witch Agatha Harkness. Then, the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness post-credits scene introduced the sorceress Clea after spending much of the movie dealing with magic. Now, Agatha All Along continues to develop and explore magic in the MCU by referencing a powerful magic-related Marvel villain.

Mephisto Was The Center Of Much Speculation During WandaVision

The Demon Was Theorized To Be The Main Villain

When WandaVision premiered in 2021, it was the first Disney+ MCU show produced by Marvel Studios, and there was a great deal of expectation that it would have major ramifications on the larger franchise. While that didn't quite turn out to be the case - aside from finally establishing Wanda as Scarlet Witch - it did feature a storyline inherently tied to magic. As a result, many theorized the main villain of WandaVision would be revealed as Mephisto. The speculation became so pervasive that even those without any comics knowledge of Mephisto had seen his name mentioned in fan conversations.

However, by the end of WandaVision, Mephisto wasn't so much as name-dropped. Instead, Agatha turned out to be the closest thing to a villain in WandaVision, and many of the curious things that happened in WestView were the result of her meddling, rather than, as viewers speculated, Mephisto. Though WandaVision is widely regarded as one of the best MCU TV shows, there was still some disappointment that one of Marvel's most powerful villains wasn't even mentioned in the show. However, WandaVision's sequel series is now paying off the rampant speculation.

Agatha All Along Episode 3 Confirms Mephisto Exists In the MCU

During Agatha All Along episode 3, the witches of Agatha's coven discover that a sigil has been placed on Joe Locke's character, and they seem to think Agatha is behind it. In a moment alone, Jennifer Kale warns Teen to be careful around Agatha, that there are rumors she traded her son, Nicholas Scratch, for the Darkhold. She says no one knows what happened to him, and he could be an "agent of Mephisto." It's the first time Mephisto has been mentioned by name in the MCU and confirms the demon's existence.

Beyond that, we don't know much else about the MCU's iteration of Mephisto. In the comics, he's a demon that rules over a pocket dimension he calls "Hell," similar to Dormammu and the Dark Dimension from 2016's Doctor Strange. However, the fact that someone could be an "agent" of Mephisto indicates he utilizes people, most likely desperate magic users, to do his bidding on Earth. Further, now that we know someone can be an agent of Mephisto, it begs the question of whether one of the characters in Agatha All Along is working for the demon - though that remains a mystery for now.

When Mephisto Could Finally Appear In The MCU

Agatha All Along Could Reveal An Agent Of Mephisto

Now that Agatha All Along episode 3 has introduced the concept of a person working for Mephisto, it's possible the show reveals one of the main cast to secretly be his agent. Aubrey Plaza's Rio Vidal is the most obvious contender, given she's already proven to be an antagonist of sorts for Agatha. In fact, she may have sought out Agatha on Mephisto's behalf, since it hasn't been explained why she showed up in WestView in episode 1.

If not Rio, Teen is also a possibility. If Mephisto needs "agents" to carry out his bidding, it's possible he could be trapped in Hell, and has enlisted Teen to walk the Witches' Road to free him. After all, Teen's reasoning for walking the Witches' Road was a simple explanation about wanting more power. The vagueness of it seems to hint that he's hiding something beyond what the sigil is forcing him to keep secret. But, there's always the possibility that the agent of Mephisto is someone unexpected, like Jennifer Kale or Lilia Calderu.

If an agent of Mephisto appears in Agatha All Along, it's likely to set up an appearance from the demon in a future MCU project. In 2022, there were reports that Sacha Baron Cohen would play Mephisto in Ironheart, which is set to release next year. How Mephisto factors into the story of Ironheart is unclear, but the villain is a Marvel character called The Hood, who has a magical demonic cloak. No matter how these shows tie together, we at least have confirmation of Mephisto's existence in the MCU, which comes after three years of speculation thanks to Agatha All Along.
