The Diplomat Renewed for the diplomat season 3 Ahead of the diplomat season 2 Release

"The Diplomat" has officially been renewed for a third season, even before the second season has hit Netflix. This exciting announcement also revealed a significant shift in the filming location for the Keri Russell-led thriller. Known for its gripping espionage plot, the show quickly became a hit after season 1, prompting Netflix to confirm season 2 less than two weeks after its debut. The series follows Kate Wyler, portrayed by Russell, the newly appointed U.S. ambassador to the UK, as she navigates international crises and uncovers terrorist conspiracies. Season 2 will continue one of these intense storylines.

According to TheWrap, Netflix's chief content officer Bela Bajaria shared the news about season 3 during the Bloomberg Screentime Conference in Los Angeles. Production has already begun, with filming set to take place in both London and New York City. This announcement, which precedes the October premiere of season 2, also confirmed that Debora Cahn will return as the showrunner. Key executive producers, including Keri Russell, Janice Williams, and Alex Graves, are also on board for season 3. Reflecting on the show's quick renewal, Cahn said:

After an amazing summer shooting in the UK, we brought London home to NY. Best of both worlds — filming in Brooklyn. We love doing this. We’re so excited to get to keep going."

What The Diplomat's Early Renewal Means for the Series

The Diplomat is part of a growing trend in streaming

where action-packed political thrillers are gaining significant popularity. The renewal of The Diplomat coincides with Netflix's announcement of season 2 of The Night Agent—another political thriller—along with an early season 3 renewal for that show. Both series belong to a rising subgenre of political intrigue and dramatized realism, driven by conspiracies and high-stakes action. Other prominent examples in the genre include Reacher on Prime Video, renewed for season 4, and The Terminal List, along with Apple TV+'s Criminal Record

Despite common themes, The Diplomat stands out due to its cast and unique approach to resolving conflicts. Memorable characters like Kate Wyler, Austin Dennison (David Gyasi), and Eidra Park (Ali Ahn) tackle dilemmas through diplomacy rather than brute force. This aspect sets the show apart from other action-heavy thrillers and adds depth to the narrative, likely contributing to its early renewal.

Our Take on The Diplomat's Early Season 3 Renewal

The quick renewal indicates that The Diplomat has a well-thought-out multi-season storyline. Season 1 left viewers on the edge of their seats with the shocking revelation that UK Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) is linked to a Russian terrorist group, paving the way for an even more intricate conspiracy in the upcoming seasons. With numerous possible plot developments ahead, the confirmation of season 3 signals the show's strong trajectory for the future.

Note

Fans can catch all episodes of  The Diplomat season 2 starting Thursday, October 31, exclusively on Netflix.
