Move Over, Deadpool - New Avengers Hero Blue Bolt Is Officially "Marvel's Biggest Jerk"

Deadpool officially has competition for the role of “biggest jerk in the Marvel Universe,” as a brand-new Aven gerslineup makes it their mission to reform villains to superhero status – debuting a rude and selfish character the process, who the team will seek to redeem. This all-new villain-turned-hero, Blue Bolt, is one of the characters who promises to shake up the relaunched West Coast Avengers series.

, promotional art by Todd Nauck shows new character Blue Bolt’s powers lighting up the Marvel Universe with a devilish grin as he officially receives the title of Marvel’s biggest jerk. The new character is a narcissistic criminal who joins the team in West Coast Avengers (2024) #1, written by Gerry Duggan with art by Danny Kim, in an attempt to reduce time on his prison sentence.

The mean and antagonistic new character won’t be easy to turn into a hero. Outrunning gunfire, the villain undergoing a heroic transformation makes a grand comics debut.

Though Blue Bolt promises to be a reprehensible character for the West Coast Avengers to attempt to reform, the Avengers brand is no stranger to other jerks and heroes with attitude. Deadpool might be one of Marvel’s most outwardly obnoxious anti-heroes and has been in other Avengers lineups in the past, and other iconic Avengers over the years, like Scarlet Witch or Hawkeye, began their comic careers as villains. However, Marvel is heavily teasing that Blue Bolt one of the worst of the worst, and won’t easily make a change of heart and personality

With an all-new roster including Ultron and this dastardly character joining the ranks, Iron Man and the other Avengers will attempt to change these villains for the better while stopping other villainous threats. When Ultron was announced to join the team, it was a shock since the sinister A.I. threat has been an iconic villain of the Avengers for decades. The roster of Iron Man, War Machine, Spider-Woman, and Firestar will try to rein characters like Blue Bolt and Ultron in and turn them into full-fledged heroes, though even Ultron may not be as much of a handful as their diabolical new member.

Marvel released design art for Blue Bolt by West Coast Avengers series artist Danny Kim, which gives another look at the character before he makes his official comics debut. The all-new character makes his first appearance and immediately joins the West Coast Avengers team, with his disgraceful history as a villain still hidden to readers so far and being teased by Duggan as something sinister. With silver hair, a vest with no shirt, a big engraved belt buckle, and cowboy boots with lighting spurs, Blue Bolt, aka Chad Braxton, already has a stand-out look as he joins the squad.

Ultron returns... redeemed? Iron Man and War Machine have put together a new team of Avengers—one that includes villains seeking a path to redemption. Their case study? Ultron—who, against all odds, seems to be walking the straight and narrow…for now. But does the success of one guarantee the success of all? Spider-Woman and Firestar have their doubts. And can any amount of heroics really absolve Ultron of his past?

Marvel has its fair share of iconic villains it could have chosen from to reform in West Coast Avengers, so it’s interesting that Duggan and Kim are establishing an all-new character to join Avengers lore. With an origin slightly reminiscent of DC's Suicide Squad, and a character attitude seemingly similar to something like The Boys, Marvel heads in a bold direction with their new hero. The vicious and villainous Blue Bolt has the possibility to ruin the West Coast Avengers as a trustworthy team of heroes, but the comparisons to Deadpool have fans hoping for another iconic redemption story.
